New Toy!

So I waved goodbye and sent the D3100 camera off to Ebay. It wasnt what I wanted. I am saving up for a better spec camera. I used some of the money from the sale of the D3100 to get a second hand flashgun for my D80.  At present I dont have a flashgun that ‘talks’ to my camera and it can be a right a nuisance!  Although the model flashgun I am getting is a few behind present (its the SB-600) it will be just what I need to do the job at the moment :) I cannot wait to get it and start trying new things. I also treated myself to a reflector from photosel at last so I can hopefully achieve much nicer outdoor portraits of people.

I await this from the postman! Maybe it will be with me tomorrow!

Bye Bye Deviant Art

I have removed my deviant art page and my photos can now be found on Flickr instead. My website will be updated in due course.  I know of some people who use deviant art they were getting abusive messages through the site. I do not want my work to be displayed on a site that allows that kind of behaviour to happen.

Here is the link to my Flickr page:

New Camera!

I have a new camera! This is good news! I now have my safety net. I will continue use my old camera as my main camera as it is better for a variety of reasons as well as being more robust.  I have got a Nikon D3100 which although Nikon describe as the ‘family’s answer to beautiful images’ it will still suffice for my back camera should I need one.  I am working on a very tight budget so sadly this was the best I could get until I get some paid photography work coming my way.

http://www.europe-nikon.com/en_GB/product/digital-cameras/slr/consumer/d3100 this is my new camera. It has come with an extra lens which was the big selling point for me as I can attach to my old camera.

I am a little disappointed with Nikon’s manufacturing of this camera as it feels really plastic and flimsy but I guess thats to be expected for under £500.

Its just a shame my dream camera sets me back about the same price as my car!!!!! yes really!!!!

Homework done!

So I’ve done my homework this month super early since I stupidly missed the deadline for last months by literally a few hours! I am taking part in the DSLR skills course that is being offered by practical photography magazine and I find it really helpful and fun. I do wish my little lady Maisie was more willing to pose for me as she is most photogenic!

I also spent a good half hour ironing my white backdrop tonight. Its a muslin type material and a nightmare to iron and huge! I must invest in some pop-up back drops. Sadly its all the cost of photographic equipment though.

I’ve also spent some time doing some homework. I’m attempting to write a descriptive piece for my main page on my website. Its proving to be quite tricking. Selling myself has never been a strong point of mine!

I love this site!: http://www.photoanswers.co.uk/DSLR-Skills/?log-out=True

Playtime…

The lights are going out after eaten and its playtime. I want to see what images I can create using simple household objects as my subjects.

Baby Kaira

I had the privilage of taking some photos on Saturday, of my friend Emma’s gorgeous baby girl Kaira who was born in November. Kaira has the most amazing blue eyes although the pictures I captured of her sleeping are really cute too.  Kaira was very well behaved and even put up with being kissed by Maisie who wasnt the most gentle at times. Maisie means no harm, she just has too much love to give when she sees a baby!!  I also captured some interesting shots of Maisie too. These were all candid shots with no lighting, no set up, just natural props and while some of you might say that yes it shows, I’m happy with how these shots turned out. Please leave your opinions though as I like to hear your views on my work.

Work is still ongoing with the website.

Surprise decent photo!

I was really surprised earlier. I downloaded some photographs from my memory card onto my laptop or should it be uploaded…jeez I really ought to learn the jargon!
Anyway I obtained the photos I had on my camera. Most of were taken at my daughter’s birthday party but about 6 were taken when out on Sunday night in Edinburgh. I had seen a really nice church on Clerk St which was lit in a nice way. I thought it would make a nice shot. Only there were big silly iron railings in the way, I am short, it was very windy, I was freezing cold so hence lots of camera shake and I had no tripod with me. Shots taken with the flash looked rubbish.
I gave it best my try.
Amazingly having now looked at the photos I took one has turned out with no camera shake and looks pretty darned good if I may say so.
Lesson learned today….always try even if I think it won’t work!!

Official Purple Pumpkin Photography website is changing

The official home for Purple Pumpkin Photography is changing! If I can get my head around the jargon and web weirdness and pull it off then I hope to reveal something very exciting over the next couple of weeks or so! I have given up my University studies so I can concentrate more fully on my photography. The excitement I feel when I think of camera related type geekery tells me I have made the right decision for me!

So followers please watch this space! In the meantime please check out my deviant art site for my latest pictures.

Welcome!!

Hello and welcome to my first blog for Purple Pumpkin Photography!
Today I had my camera out and about in Edinburgh. I didn’t get many touristy photos of Scottish things but I did get some fabby photos of me having my tattoo on my leg started. I just want to say that taking those photos was an interesting challenge! I kept wanting to flinch when the needle touched my skin on sensitive areas. I had to keep the camera as still as possible to get good shots because I had make sure the flash was off so as not to distract the tattooist.
I am hoping to post a sample of a photo I took today if I can figure out how to apply a new layer and then apply a saved layer in adobe photoshop elements. Editing photos is NOT a strong point of mine!
